You’ve probably eaten foods with coriander in it at some point in your life, perhaps you have even cooked with the little coriander seeds yourself, but we are willing to bet you’ve never considered that it possesses some very powerful compounds! Neither did we when we first came across this unique supercritical CO2 extract of coriander, but when we entered it into our beta-testing program, we were all blown away by the effects! Within 15-30 minutes after dosing the coriander extract, we started to feel a warm relaxing wave come over us, our muscles relaxed and the stress of the day rapidly faded away. These effects kept increasing, sending us into a deeper, and deeper state of serene relaxation. We were sold, and yet, still surprised by these modest little seeds, from which cilantro grows!
Coriander is very high in linalool, a compound also often found in lavender, hops and hemp. Within these plants, the linalool content also plays a major role in the relaxing effects. However, the linalool that is in coriander, is a special form, the (S)-(+) enantiomer, while lavender, hops and hemp contain the (R)-(−) enantiomer. This has a significant effect on the aroma of linalool, with the (S)-(+) enantiomer being much fruitier in aroma. In terms of effects however, there is not a lot of research on the different enantiomers, but anecdotally, when compared to lavender derived linalool we found the coriander derived linalool to be superior in its calming properties. So, if you are looking for a seriously relaxing supplement, our supercritical CO2 coriander extract is for you!
Coriander comes from Coriandrum sativum, which is an aromatic plant with small white flowers. Coriandrum sativum seeds are known as coriander while the leaves are commonly referred to as cilantro! It is also a part of the Apiaceae family and is grown throughout Asia, Europe and Africa. Coriander has seen extensive use throughout history, in fact, a large amount of coriander was even found in the tomb of king Tutankhamun!
The coriander seeds are very high in the fruity smelling enantiomer of the terpene linalool, (S)-(+) linalool. This is in direct contrast to another very popular linalool source, lavender, which contains the (R)-(−) enantiomer. To get this special linalool enantiomer out of the coriander seeds, we decided to go with a very unique extraction method called supercritical CO2. CO2 can exist in multiple different states, most commonly as a gas, but under special circumstances CO2 can also exist as a solid (dry ice) and as a supercritical liquid. To get CO2 into the supercritical liquid state, very specific temperatures and pressures must be used. Once the supercritical state has been reached, CO2 can act like a solvent. The supercritical CO2 liquid is then forced through coriander seeds, and at the end of the extraction, we are left with the cleanest and most potent possible coriander oil with a whopping 25% linalool content!
Linalool has very pronounced effects on the GABAergic system, and because our supercritical CO2 coriander extract is very high in linalool, this means it possesses prominent GABAergic effects. This is where the majority of the mental and physical relaxation effects come from. These effects are further potentiated by linalools ability to block NMDA receptors and the serotonin transporter, while also interacting with glycinergic, adrenergic and adenosinergic signaling. By hitting these targets, our coriander extract produces a wonderful and powerful relaxing effect that has quickly become a favorite around the office!
Not only do these neurological mechanisms aid in relaxation, they also help enhance sleep quality. Several studies found that coriander supplementation can help to increase sleep times and even help to regulate stress levels, which makes sense, given linalools ability to lower cortisol levels! Anecdotally, taking our coriander extract before bed made it much easier to fall asleep, while also making it easier to stay asleep.
The neurological effects also have a significant effect on neurological pain processing. This can be felt fairly acutely, by the prominent physical relaxation effects. Given that pain can also seriously get in the way of sleep, this makes our coriander extract an ideal pre-bedtime supplement when you are experiencing pain!
One of our favorite uses for the coriander supercritical CO2 extract has been as a pleasant relaxation agent after the work day is over. Take some coriander extract, put some nice music on, a great movie, a binge worthy TV show or a fantastic book, and float away into the ether!
We also offer our coriander extract as capsules, but the liquid form has some distinct benefits! First and foremost, the liquid formulation features a higher dose, and thus, more pronounced effects. Secondly, the liquid form allows you to use it in foods and beverages more easily. Be warned though, the flavor is intense, but if you like very citrusy/lemony coriander flavor, this is a fantastic functional “spice” that can bring brightness and vibrancy not only to your foods and beverages, but also to your spirits!
